Ever since the 16th-century landings of Cortez in Mexico and the Pizarro Brothers in Peru, Central and South America have been continuously drained of precious metals.

 


The Capped Head Left half eagle series, minted from 1813 to 1834, suffered the most destruction from these melts.

1829 Capped Head Quarter Eagle 2 1/2 Gold Dollar
The new Capped Head Quarter Eagle 2 1/2 Gold Dollar coin was also designed by Chief Engraver Robert Scot. This coin was produced from 1921 to 1834.

The Capped Head half eagle series, minted from 1813 to 1834, suffered the most destruction from these melts.

In 1813 John Reich modified his design.

After 1808 no quarter eagles were minted until 1821, when the Capped Head to Left style made its appearance, a design continued intermittently through 1834.

The obverse of these coins depicts a capped head of Liberty surrounded by stars with the exception of some specimens of the quarter eagle dated 1796 where no stars are shown. The reverse is devoted to an eagle in various forms with outstretched neck.
