Carson City Mint, 1866
Carson City Mint was a branch of the United States Mint in Carson City, Nevada. Built at the peak of the silver boom, 57 issues of silver coins minted here between 1870 and 1893 bore the "CC" mint mark.

This month's topic: quarter eagles. The Liberty Head quarter eagle series was produced from 1840 through 1907. Unlike the larger denomination issues of this type, quarter eagles were never produced at the Carson City or Denver mints.

"This is a great historic location that has the mystique of the Carson City coins surrounding it. It's just a really good show," Rowe said.
The Nevada State Museum is housed in the building that used to serve as the Carson City Mint.

Carson City Mint
Located in Nevada, this mint produced gold and silver coins from 1870-1893. It was closed from 1885-1889 due to a lack of funding. In 1893 the mint was permanently closed due to internal corruption.

Carson City Mint (1870-1893): In 1870 a mint was opened in Carson City, Nevada to take advantage of silver (and to a lesser extent gold) found in the Comstock Lode in Nevada.

A coin, usually a Proof, with a frosted central area surrounded by a mirror like field.

The majority of these were mint state Carson City coins, offered at $15 each for "tarnished" specimens and $30 each for the remainder. Later on, better date pieces were sold at higher prices.

Other than the 1875 issue, all Carson City Type 2 double eagles are rare in mint condition, while the 1870-CC and 1871-CC are major rarities in that state of preservation.

Carson City to produce the needed coinage, but that did not occur until the
early 1900s.  In February of 1874, Nevada Senator John Percival Jones
introduced a bill in Congress for the production of the Twenty-cent piece.  ...

      There were five Mints used to produce the $10 Liberty: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver. Philadelphia minted coins from 1838 to 1907.

9 million Morgans left in 1964, mostly scarce Carson City specimens, which the GSA put up for public sale via mail-bid auctions starting in 1972. By 1980, as the supplies dwindled, the public finally became interested in the beautiful Morgan Dollar.

Reverse B was used on some 1878-P, all San Francisco-minted 1878's, and the 1878 Carson City issue. It was also used on some 1879-S and 1880-CC issues. Reverse B has 7 tail feathers, a parallel top arrow feather and a flat eagle's breast.

Several hundred business strike Seated, Arrows, quarters are listed in census/ population reports, with significantly fewer Carson City and San Francisco examples for 1873. At least one prooflike piece has been certified for the type.

"S" for San Francisco, "D" for Denver Colorado in the 20th Century and "D" for Dahlonega Georgia in the 19th century; "O" for New Orleans, "C" for Charlotte, North Carolina, "CC" for Carson City, Nevada and if no mint mark, Philadelphia.

This second year Carson City Morgan dollar issue has been prized for decades, and after the GSA inventory showed fewer than 5,000 1879 CC dollars left in government holdings.

Quarters with the "CC" mintmark indicates the coin was produced at the Carson City Mint in Nevada. All are highly prized by collectors. Many are extremely rare. Refer back to the coin values chart for some amazing values.

In Morgan dollars the favorite coin is the Carson City (CC) mint mark. Hence, the favored son technique may often provide the CC dollar with between a 1/2 and 3/4 point increase over non-CC mint mark adorned Morgan Dollars.

An 1879 dollar has a base value of $5.00, unless it is a "CC" dollar (made at Carson City, Nevada). Then the price goes to about $50.00.

Fully struck and blast white. There is a slight golden toning around the rim. This is a beautiful example from the Carson City Mint.
