Carus, Praetorian Prefect at the death of Probus, was proclaimed Emperor. He associated his two sons in the reign and set out on campaign against the Persians.

Carus, AD282-283, AE Antoninianus. Radiate bust rt./VIRTVS AVGG, emperor receives Victory on globe from Jupiter, TR between, XXI in exergue. A little offcentered on oversized flan, nothing off, brown patina, nice portrait and rev., about Very Fine.

--In 282, he was appointed governor of Dalmatia, under Carus, who held him in such high esteem, as to have intended to appoint Constantius as his successor, instead of his own unworthy son Carinus.

The AVGGG issues with this reverse type were struck at Antioch in the names of Carus Augustus and both Carinus and Numerian Caesars. The same mint also produced coins for all three with reverse AVGG.
