Most cast coins were cast in molds, but in the latter half of the 19th and the early 20th century, some provinces started to move to milled coinage. This cash coin of Kwangtung Province, 1890-1908, is one such milled coin.
Initially a cast coin, like the rest of Roman Republican bronzes, it began to be struck from shortly before the Second Punic War (218-204 BC).
Detecting Cast Coins
The weight and composition of cast coins has been mentioned above. Generally cast coins have a slightly smaller diameter that official issues because molten metal will shrink somewhat as it cools.

Schjoth records: "Hsu Chia's proposal to cast coins by a chemical process, of fusing copper and iron, was adopted.". We assume this refers to a copper-iron alloy but have not been able to determine which coins these were.
The coins were called "cast coins", because of the way they were manufactured in the form of a casting. These were iron and copper coins and were inscribed with four characters on the obverse, KON WON CHUNG BO, "Lasting, Original, Heavy Currency".
After the Punic Wars, these cumbersome cast coins were replaced by a new series of Roman coins based on the denarius, the principal Roman denomination for the next four hundred years.
The cast coins were easier to detect than the die struck counterfeit coins. Some feel that the design elements of a few counterfeits are so good that they must have been struck with dies made from the original Mint hubs.
The coinage of Latium may be divided into two classes: 1st, Cast coins, consisting of aes grave uninscribed but usually found in Central Italy and chiefly in Latium; 2nd, Struck coins, AR of the towns of Alba Fucens and Signia, and Æ of Aquinum.
Although the use of heavy, bronze cast coins was not confined to Rome, it is probable that it originated there, for the earliest specimens of aes grave with types are the Asses of Rome itself.
