Cent: A decimal coin equal to one one-hundredth of a larger basic denomination, usually the lowest value coin issued by the issuing country. The word "cent" is derived from the Latin centum, meaning one hundred.

The cent's composition was changed in 1982 because the value of the copper in the coin started to rise above one cent. Some 1982 cents use the 97.6% zinc composition, while others used the 95% copper composition.

The U.S. House of Representatives has finally taken some action in an endeavour to solve the current penny crisis. The question of whether or not to do away with the penny is being put aside for the time being.

Large cent specialists often try to acquire as many varieties as possible. The guide for this endeavor is in the works of Dr. William H. Sheldon, Early American Cents and the update published in 1958 called Penny Whimsy.

The 20-cent piece was forgotten for 70 years. Its next advocate was John Percival Jones. Born in Herefordshire, England, on February 27, 1829, he came to America that year with his parents. Later, he attended schools in Cleveland.

The Twenty Cent Piece was a very short-lived series that was halted because the public complained about its size being so similar to the quarter (A mistake the Mint repeated with the Susan B. Anthony dollar).

The new one-cent reverse designs will be issued at approximately three-month intervals throughout 2009.

The second example initially generated considerable controversy over the sequence between the large cent and half cent strikes. Mark Borckardt incorrectly argued that the half cent was struck first.

The coin in question is a 1797 Liberty Cap, Facing Right, Half Cent, and their varieties are attributed using Cohen Variety System.

Two-Cent Pieces (1864-1873)
Two-cent pieces first appeared in 1864 and were made as an answer to the lack of government coins in circulation in an era in which the public engaged in widespread hoarding.

Bar Cent - A token struck in this country shortly after the War of Independence, so called because it carries a series of bars on the reverse. On the obverse is the lettering "U.S.A." in script, without any further design or date.

The one-cent piece has been the most regularly produced U.S. coin. A one-cent piece has been struck in every year except 1815. In 1793, its first year, 112,212 pieces in three different designs were issued.

The half cent restrike of 1811 and the large cent restrikes of 1823 and "1804" come from this batch. They deceived few collectors but turned a profit anyway.

Star three cent silvers often survive in MS-67 grade. An 1852 regular strike inverted date silver coin with an upside-down date is worth $650 in Almost Uncirculated condition. A three cents silver coin proof 1863/2 in MS-67 is worth $10,000.

The only major difference between nickel coins and other coins is that spots are slightly more detracting on nickel than on silver or gold but less detracting than they are on copper coins.

On the Jefferson Nickel since 1968, the mint mark follows the date on the obverse.

I have an Indian cent that looks pretty excellent to me -- what is its condition in collectors' terms?

large cent A large copper U.S. coin, one-hundredth of a dollar, issued from 1793 until 1857, when it was replaced by a much smaller cent made from a copper-nickel alloy.

Copper(s) A United States cent dated before 1982, the year in which the metal used to make cents transitioned from copper to copper-plated zinc. Also used to refer to the elongated coin rolled from a copper cent.

S VDB Short for 1909-S VDB Lincoln Head cent. S-Mint Term applied to the coins struck at the San Francisco, California branch Mint. Sac Short for Sacagawea Dollar.

For example a Lincoln Cent Wheat back series would contain one of each date cent minted from 1909 to 1958, including each mint mark as well. show - to display or show a group of coins. Coin shows (or bourses) occur often in many areas.

Since I had many of these ten cent coins I knew that they were mostly worthless and I decided not to research this coin in 'The Standard Catalog of World Coins". But, it hurt my sense of order not to research this one coin and I looked it up.
