Amos Certification Service (ANACS)
ANACS came into being as an arm of the American Numismatic Association, the world's largest coin club.

Coin Certification Organizations
Independent organizations have been created for the purpose of grading coins. For a fee, coin enthusiasts may submit coins for grading.

Certification in the US

Certification is the best friend of the coin collector. It will also keep coin dealers from having to donate blood every time you suspect the authenticity of a coin.

Some certification services will not slab coins that have been altered, whizzed, cleaned (dipping is often acceptable), artificially toned or otherwise damaged. Others slab the coin and identify the problem on the label.

Before third-party certification was started by PCGS in 1986, these certificates were the best available protection for the coin buyer. Each PNG dealer could issue a certificate, one copy given to the buyer and one copy sent to the PNG main office.

Breakout With the advent of third-party grade-certification or "slabbing" in 1986, a new technique developed of breaking a coin out of its plastic slab and resubmitting it to the same service or another grading service for a hoped-for upgrade.

The certification services will often recognize important numismatic collections by placing a pedigree on the certification holder to identify it as such. Coins bearing certain pedigrees often carry significant premiums in value.

The law of diminishing returns holds true for certification services - there are only so many coins that can be certified. Now, since I have never been an insider to the decision making at PCGS and NGC, I can only speculate on their motives.

ANACS - American Numismatic Association Certification Service. This grading and certification service certifies coins as genuine, grades, and encapsulates them. One of the original grading services.

In 1984, my partner, Steve Ivy and I set up the Numismatic Certification Institute (N.C.I.) in an attempt to standardize grading. Our goal was for coins graded by N.C.I. to be considered consistently graded enough to trade sight-unseen by dealers.

slabbed: the act of sealing a coin in a protective plastic case, usually performed by grading and certification services.

Surprise! All ten coins were returned with polite suggestions to send them to the American Numismatic Association Certification Service (ANACS) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

It has changed hands several times and finally found it's way to ANACS for certification. ANACS authenticated, certified, and graded it MS 64. It is a dual date (two different years, and also two different centuries, 2000/1999).

Although certification services and slabbing have palliated this concern somewhat, a coin dealer's financial stability is a good indicator of the likelihood that he'll be around for a long time and financially able to provide recompense.

They should only be held by their edges and care should be taken not to touch their surfaces. Certification companies will encapsulate coins for a fee and this might be one of the best ways to protect them from the elements.

We prefer to price these for less than a collector would pay for a "raw" uncirculated specimen, plus the NGC grading and certification fees.

Used particularly by investors, high value coins and other numismatic pieces are forwarded to a recognised, independent grading agency for evaluation. Along with a grading certification, each item is then sealed within a 'slab' of inert plastic.

PCGS labeled it a Lincoln Cent double-strike, 80% off-center with nickel dies. Other certification services would likely have described it differently. Could this then newly struck cent have somehow flown onto a nickel press? ...

While there are subtle differences in the standards applied by each of these grading services, it is strongly recommended that most higher value and rare date coins should be submitted to one of these companies for evaluation and certification.
