Composition
Although most cash are copper or bronze, other metals were also used. The upper of these two coins is a cash coin of the Five Dynasties (Southern Han) period, 907-960, and is made of lead.

COMPOSITIONAL ANALYSIS
The composition of the coin was determined quantitatively at five different locations (a to e) as indicated in figure 2. All the values and average of major components is shown in table 1.

The composition of U.S. coins has changed considerably over the past few decades.

The composition of the new coin was based on that adopted by France in 1852, and consisted of 95% copper, 4% tin and 1% zinc. Inevitably, a number of patterns were produced before the final design was accepted.

The dollar coin features distinguishing traits including: a golden color, extra-wide border, smooth edge like the nickel's, and specially designed alloy.

Clad - Composition metal coin with a sandwich layer which is the clad layer, with two outer layers for the obverse and reverse.

In 1965, the composition was changed from 90% silver to a clad or sandwich metal of 75% copper and 25% nickel, bonded to a pure copper core.

The metallic composition of the coin is complex: a pure copper core is clad with layers of metallurgically bonded outer layers of manganese brass. It weighs 8.1 grams and has a diameter of 26.5 mm.

Beyond their composition and presumed low weight the only other information we can glean about these pieces is that they probably had a mark identifying the issuer.

From 1942 through 1945, the composition of the Jefferson nickel was changed to what is known as the "wartime alloy" of 56 percent copper, 35 percent silver and 9 percent manganese to allow the government to use nickel as a strategic material.
