jugate: Accolated, conjoined. The overlapping portraits of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette on the 1900 Lafayette Memorial commemorative silver dollar are a jugate portrait.

Conjoined - Two or more busts shown facing the same way with one on top of the other. The only British example of this is William and Mary 1688-94.

contact marks, bag marks: Minor abrasions on an otherwise Uncirculated coin, caused by handling in Mint-sewn bags and contact with other surfaces. Sometimes called bag marks.

Jugate - Conjoined busts facing the same direction slightly offset from each other in such a way as to allow the bottom bust to be partially seen while the top bust is shown in its entirety.

Their heads appear conjoined on the guinea piece in Roman style, with William's head uppermost, with the legend GVLIELMVS ET MARIA DEI GRATIA.

William III and his wife Mary were crowned in Westminster Cathedral on 13 February 1689 and until Mary died of smallpox in 1694, their conjoined busts are depicted on the coins.

The unusual coin was made in the shape of the conjoined maps of Australia and Zambia.

These coins are round and feature the Pillars of Hercules surrounding crowned, conjoined globes and ocean waves below, hence the other name for this coin, "Pillar Dollar". To the left of the date is the mint mark.

Those of us with the Krause "phone book" (5) can readily find three of the many issues for 1865; the 1/4 and 1/2 melgarejos with conjoined busts of Munoz and Melgarejo with its propaganda (note, no stated value and nothing about Bolivian Republic) to ...
