A member of the Constantinian dynasty, he was made Caesar by Constantius II in 355 and took command of the western provinces. During his reign he campaigned successfully against the Alamanni and Franks.

Julian came to power in 360 CE in a revolt against Constantius II and tried to reinstate pagan gods. Julian would certainly be looking for a heavenly sign to offset the Christian vision of Constantius' father, Constantine the Great.

The bronze centenionalis, were the attempts of Constans and Constantius II to reintroduce a large bronze coin between 320-340 AD, as the follis had by then shrunk dramatically.

About 346 Constantius II and his brother Constans replaced the now tiny bronze follis with a larger piece, usually termed the centenionalis.

Several attempts were made to halt the decline in the bronze coinage, notably by Constantius II and Constans who introduced the centenionalis in A.D. 346 and by Magnetius, who struck his large /El (pecunia maiorina) in A.d. 352-3. Julian II (A.D.
