Coronet Head: design type of a head of Liberty with a crown-like ornament. Used on U.S. copper coins from 1816-1857 and U.S. gold coins from 1838-1907.

Alternate name for Braided Hair design by Christian Gobrecht (also called Liberty Head design).

The Coronet eagle continued to be minted until 1907 with only one major change to the design. The carnage of the Civil War and the terrible upheaval that followed found the population of the country in a religious and philosophical mood.

The Coronet Design of James B. Longacre was utilized for the coins dated 1907. The mintage was almost 2.2 million coins. The designs of Augustus Saint-Gaudens began in 1908.

Liberty Head "Coronet" Double Eagle
Also known as the "Coronet Type Double Eagle," this gold coin was designed by James Longacre, who also designed the Indian Head Cent. The Double Eagle is the greatest American coin in both size and value.

On the twentyfive and fifty-cents the queen wears a coronet. Various changes were made in the design of this coin throughout the years.

Type I, minted from 1849 through 1854, features a head of Liberty wearing a beaded coronet or crown surrounded by stars.

Much of the wear will be localized on the tip of the coronet, the hair near the ear of Liberty and the wing tips. The shield and the claws show weakness but are better defined than on Very Fine coins.

This gold coin was minted and issued by the United States mint between 1907 and 1933 as a coin for circulation, and its design replaced the older 'coronet head' $20 double eagle.

Collectors will often see the designations primarily assigned to the half cent series (Liberty Cap, Draped Bust, Classic Head, and Coronet); large cents (Flowing Hair, Liberty Cap, Draped Bust, Classic Head and Coronet); Indian Head and Lincoln cents; ...

Above all, remember if that Coronet Double Eagle minted in Carson City in 1876 is genuine, given Coronet prices ($2,000 and up), all that glisters really is gold.
