Greek coins with added interest
A coin that has been stamped or marked with a design after it was originally struck is termed 'countermarked'.

Countermark
Letter, symbol, monogram punched on a coin's side - for example, to change his value or, frequently, to guarantee its weight and fineness - by the State or by private persons.

Countermark - Or sometimes called counterstamp is a stamp or mark impressed on a coin to verify its use by another government, or to indicate revaluation.
Crown - A dollar-size silver coin, specifically one of Great Britain.

Countermark or Counterstamp
Letters, symbols, numbers or other marks that are stamped on a coin after minting. They could be used for special advertising or political slogans etc.

Symbols, design(s) or lettering punched on a coin to change its value, usage or purpose. Also known as a counterstamp. See also surcharge.

Countermark - A mark stamped on an existing coin usually to indicate a new value.

Countermark - A mark or design placed on a coin either by an issuing authority or by a private individual. During the reign of George III a small bust of the king was counterstamped on silver coins to make them legal tender in the United Kingdom.

THE COUNTERMARKS
Throughout the world only thirteen specimens of Pilate's coins are listed as bearing countermarks. Three of them can be found in Israel's museums, and the other ten
are in private collections.

Countermarks establish a chronological relationship between the coin and the countermark itself, and may sometimes be used to date each other, when they overlap on the same coin.

These countermarks occur also on primitive electrum coins described infra under Sardes, and the issues of the two cities can be only conjecturally separated.

This wheel countermark has so far been found on only one other coin type and that is the coin illustrated No. 4 above, which is in the collection of Lance Dane in Bombay, reportedly found in Junagarh in Gujerat.

Classical Owl Type A test-cut, countermarked, and corroded tetradrachm (16.62g, 27mm), Athens, c. 454-431 BC, Sear 2526v. As with the previous two pieces, this is also a full-crest Owl. But it may be the ugliest Owl I've ever seen.

Banker's Mark A small countermark applied to a coin by a bank or a trader indicating that they consider the coin to be genuine and of legal weight.

Initially it was permitted to remain current at reduced values, but the two worst classes of testoons were countermarked to circulate at values of 4 1/2d and 2 1/4d. Other silver pieces were derated and finally demonetized in 1561.

The Bank of England bought up a large number of Spanish colonial 8 reale coins and initially countermarked them with a small oval shaped counterstamp of King George III's portrait. These countermarked dollars were valued at 4s9d.

1799 dollar that had been countermarked on the obverse with a series of Xs. It appears that somebody later attempted to cover up the countermarks with silver solder but stopped when he realized the attempt was a dismal failure.

Yefimok
The name given to a thaler or dollar-sized coin that has been countermarked for use in Russia in the mid-1600's.

He lists five varieties of this token plus four restrikes and a Twentieth century countermarked variety. Krause-Mishler calls this a Type III variety, having a large large pineapple on the obverse and a large portrait on the reverse.
