Counterstamped - A stamp signifying a special event that is struck into the coin after the coin has been produced. These are always post mint counterstamps. Some have significant historical significance and can positively affect the value.

Counterstamp
A stamp or impression placed on a coin after it has left the Mint of origin. Counterstamps were frequently used as advertising gimmicks on Large Cents and other coins.

Counterstamp
A design of some sort stamped on a coin for a particular identification or promotional purpose. Counterstamped coins are graded following regular guidelines, but a description and condition of the counterstamp must also be provided.

The Counterstamp Mintmark of mention in this post is a confusion in itself. The coin available to press by RAM attendees was a 2009 Mob of Roos one dollar with a special Kangaroo mintmark that consists of a C with a kangaroo hopping through it.

The counterstamps form a type of privy mark, however, we cannot come to any conclusion as to the purpose.

The punch and counterstamp style of mutilation ordered and sanctioned by Macquarie was not unique to New South Wales.

Countermark or Counterstamp
Letters, symbols, numbers or other marks that are stamped on a coin after minting. They could be used for special advertising or political slogans etc.

The term "countermark" or "counterstamp" is also used for the "COPY" or similar indication on modern replicas. Most test-cut Owls were test cut on the reverse, with most of these in turn being cut through the owl's head.

The 5/8" counterstamp on the obverse reads "NATIONAL COIN WEEK WINNERS, 1952.

Bowers was already interested in counterstamped coins and had two of Dr. Shattuck's when he read Ken Hallenbeck's article in the August 1965 issue of The Numismatist. That article was the first to mention the coins, among others, and with no details.

The reverse of the coin bears a counterstamp of a fancy 'H'. When listed in the auction catalog, this mark was called a Cyrillic N and explained as a modern collector's mark.

Many consider the 1848 2 1/2 dollar gold piece counterstamped "CAL" to be the first US commemorative coin, as it commemorated the finding of gold in California.

This includes elongated coins, encased coins, souvenir medallions, tags, badges, counterstamped coins, wooden nickels and other similar items.

While waiting during the siege of Jerusalem they took worn out coins and counterstamped them with "Lx", making them suitable for army use. This coin bears that signature of the Tenth Roman Legion that did these things.

Notes: Key date 1878CC due to numerous coins being melted and low mintage. Proofs are rare too. Many trade dollars have been counterstamped with Chinese 'chop marks'. These marks typically devalue the coin.

Ephraim took his studies seriously, and today there is beautiful silverware that survives with his counterstamp.
