Design Types of U.S. Coins
The Early Years
After much deliberation and several false starts, the government acquired buildings in Philadelphia in 1792 and set about establishing a native mint.

 


design type A specific motif placed upon coinage which may be used for several denominations and subtypes, e.g., the Liberty Seated design type used for silver coins from half dimes through dollars and various subtypes therein.

design type: the name given to the design on a particular U.S. coin.
designation: specific attributes of a coin or series
designer: the person who creates the design of a coin. He/she may also be the engraver.

Design type - A specific motif such as Draped Bust placed upon coinage, which may be used for several denominations and subtypes.
Designer - The artist who creates a coin's design.

Three design types appeared in 1793 cent large, each design had flowing hair on the obverse. The first reverse design, known as the Chain Cent, features a low-relief head of Liberty with fine, flowing locks of hair.

The first design type in our set is the Classic Head. It was made from 1834 through 1838. Gems are quite scarce and very expensive so most type collectors will focus on coins graded MS63 or MS64.

4) Major vs Minor design types
It is a matter of personal preference whether a type collector wishes to include only the major designs, the moderate variations present in the "Red Book", or even more subtle variations.

There are two basic design types of the Carlos and Johanna 1, 2, 3, and 4
reales:  the pillar type with an approximate date range of 1536 - 1542, and
the pillar with waves type with an approximate date range of 1542 - 1572.  ...

While the series has only two major design types, it includes numerous varieties. Among these is the so-called "punctuated" date of 1795, created by a slip of an engraver's tool, which resulted in the date reading 1,795.

As one of the five major design types of the popular Seated Liberty series, Stars Obverse half dimes are collected by date and mintmark as well as by type.

There are two design types and the first one created was controversial. Hermon A. MacNeil designed this quarter with Miss Liberty standing with an olive branch for peace in one hand and a shield for protection in the other.

The predominate design type is the horseman type, which was now considered the "Moscow Arms". Several distinct horseman types appear. The legends on Ivan's coins state the formulas "Grand Prince Ivan, son of Vasili" as well as "Lord of all Russia".

There have been only three basic design types of small cents. The Flying Eagle cent was the first small cent and portrays an Eagle in flight on the dated side and a wreath of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco on the reverse.

subtype: Intentional variation made to a design type that leaves the overall design identifiable as a type. For example, the Bison on Plain and Bison on Mound designs for the Indian Head 5-cent coin are different subtypes.

Variety - a variety is a coin that differs from its basic design type in some distinctive way and is thus differentiated by collectors

Early Bust dimes are some of the most sought after of all US coins. The entire series of this design type is rare. 1796 and 1797 the important first two years, are both worth well over $2000 each.
