1949 Britain devalues and starts an international realignment of exchange rates
Britain devalues the pound from $4.30 to $2.80 i.e. by about 30% against the dollar.

 


If a mint used less precious metal than was required so that the product was under weight or if they used a more debased metal that was below the required fineness, then the coinage produced would be devalued in relation to other coinages.

Then began the daunting task to decide how to devalue the old coins (rochunas) and find a way to discriminate them from the new coins (rodases) until a totally new "pillars-and-waves" design could be put in place.

Where would we turn to if the known currencies of the world suddenly devalued and became worthless in real terms?

Thus the use of light or devalued coinage for payment discouraged import of goods into England, encouraged export and thereby created a favorable balance of trade and a net flow of silver into the country.

The Bank was nationalized in 1946 by the post-war socialist Labor government, and soon the Pound itself was devalued from over $4 to only $2.80.

However, where the value of paper money varies against gold, this indicates that the paper money is fiat money and will often devalue against specie. This has been the case during wars when governments would issue paper currency not backed by specie.

So the Europeans power realised their money was being devalued because their finding more silver in the new world and decided to refuse to accept silver for payment of debt.

A unit of account that has no anchor tends to devalue over time, sometimes rapidly. This has been proven in the history of the D-4 dollar since 1971.

The aureus was continually devalued (in weight, not gold content) for some time until eventually the solidus became the gold standard.
