Die alignment

Numismatic DidiaDie axis

die alignment Term to indicate the relative position of the obverse and reverse dies.

Die alignment: 305° (eagle's head points to 5:00 when coin is turned on its horizontal axis). On the "normal" 180° die alignment, the eagle's head points to 12:00 when the coin is turned on its horizontal axis.

Comments: The reverse die alignment assumes the English shield (with the three lions) is in the top position. This is a an original coin showing signs of corrosion (known as pesting) as is common for these tin products.

coins, and nearly all world coins, are struck in one or the other of these proper die alignments. Die rotation errors are known to exist, where the coin's reverse isn't precisely lined up with the obverse.

stamp the die into a piece of soft metal to see how the work was progressing (these are generally uniface stampings on oversized or irregularly shaped blanks). Die Trials also include "setup" pieces which were used to determine proper die alignments ...
