Die breaks - Cuds
Perhaps the most popular die errors are major die breaks, commonly known as 'cuds.' These occur when a portion of the die breaks away as the consequence of a progressive crack.

 


die break: a fracture in a die that can range from a small crack to sinking of a major portion of the die.
die crack: fine lines of raised metal that are transferred to a coin when the die cracks under pressure.

die break An area of a coin that is the result of a broken die. This may be triangular or other geometric shape. Dies are made of steel and they crack from use and then, if not removed from service, eventually break.

die break: die defect, usually a crack or break. Visible on the resulting coin.

Die Break
Raised irregular areas on a coin, the result of metal from the planchet being forced through a portion of the DIE which has broken and fallen out during the minting process.

Die breaks are seen in many if not most. An MS-61 (NGC) specimen was observed with a die break on the reverse at the left, beginning below the eagle's beak, extending upward through the beak, into UN (UNITED).

Many die breaks and cuds on Morgan and Peace Dollars have been described and cataloged as VAMs.
Error Coins and Die Varieties ...

Large die break in the field to the right of the effigy when combined with reverse D (P.13). When married to reverse C (P.12) there is no break. Thus, P.12 was struck first.

cud
A form of die break that leaves a shapeless lump of metal on part of a coin.
cupro-nickel
Copper-nickel; term often employed by the government.

Such cracks were filled with metal from the planchets when coins were struck, causing raised ridges or irregular lines known as die breaks.

When one die breaks or otherwise falls out of use, it is replaced by another. The history of dies and their combination may be represented graphically.

Newman/Kessler 8-X, the much sought type with the die break completely across the sun dial, down through the E of BUSINESS and ending at the rim. Kessler rates it R-4 in AU and low R-5 in Unc. This is virtually UNC.

The interesting features of this coin are the die breaks on the obverse.

Other varieties will show occasional areas of weakness due to die breakage. In high grades, signs of friction first begin to show on the highest points of the hair above the forehead and along the shoulder and bust line of Liberty.

The latter group includes die filling (where metal from a planchet remains in an incuse portion of the die, lessening or obliterating all or part of a relief feature in subsequent strikes), die breaks (where a relief portion of a die breaks off, ...

High-relief equates to high die breakage and low production in the manufacturing

At the same time, there is a die break just under her left eye that could be seen as a tear (I think it is a die break.) I don't know whether to smile at her or cry with her. Great eyes and, as always, great lips.

BIE
A lincoln cent error caused by a die break between the "B" and the "E" in Liberty, giving the appearance of "BIE".
Bifrons
This is the name for coin where 2 faces are on one side, for example the god Janus, on roman coins.

Die cracks or breaks where there is a line on the design occurring uniquely on that coin. With a die breaking each succeeding coin may have a greater degree of the die crack until the die breaks and is replaced.

Cud - A raised lump of metal on a coin caused by a piece of the die breaking off, leaving an open space on the die.
Cull - A term for a coin, usually silver dollars, that are excessively worn or damaged.

Note that true Confederate half dollars have a die break between Miss Liberty's nose and the rim. Coins made from dies 1861 and later are genuine Confederate coins.

A coin that is worn to the point of being barely identifiable, and/or damaged.

There is a die break on the cheek which is not visible on the image. Actual size is 30.5 mm. and the weight is 14.25 grams. SHEKELS OF TYRE ARE THE MOST LIKELY CANDIDATES FOR THE 30 PIECES OF SILVER PAID TO JUDAS.

Even with 5X magnification there are no marks, hairlines or luster breaks in evidence. The luster is vibrant, the strike is razor-sharp, and the eye appeal is the ultimate. Note: Minor die polish and light die breaks are not considered to be defects ...

It is possible to know the sequence of a coins striking relative to another, both products of the same die, by the progression of the blemish (crack) on the coin's surface. If the die deteriorates to the point that the die breaks apart, ...

The layout of this obverse is nearest to Breen's obverses 17 and 25, less like 15, 22, and 24, though not identical to any. Even if the "die break" were a creation of whoever tooled the corrosion away, the combination is still a new variety.
