Definition: A die crack is a mark appearing on a coin, usually in the form of a fine raised line or small blob.
It is unusual to find a piece that does not have die cracks, and such examples trade for more in uncirculated condition, unlike many other coins where die cracks are considered an interesting variety with slight to moderate premium value.
Many examples exhibit major die cracks on both obverse and reverse. Most coins of this date have no remaining luster, but a few coins exist with semi- prooflike luster and they are very rare.
Grease in the dies, clashed dies, die cracks and die scratches are another story. The grading services will almost always grade coins with these problems, even if they are rather severe.
Slightest hint of one or two detracting marks or die cracks may be visible under three times plus magnification only. Full mint lustre may be present.

The centers are very often flatly impressed, and this tends to give the erroneous impression of wear. A number of coins show pronounced die cracks which further weaken the overall quality of strike.

D. Planchet Size Uneven thickness of planchets.
The most significant of these are the Small Motto and Large Motto varieties of 1864. The Small Motto is rarer and more valuable. Doubled dies, die cracks and other mint errors are often encountered in this series.

Die cracks are often quite helpful but it is important to remember that they can progress with time. The single most powerful tool in recognizing die matches is a familiarity the student develops with the coins being studied.
