die rust: dies are made of steel and occasionally rust, causing pits in the die and raised bumps of metal on the coins struck from those dies. die state: the status of a die relative to wear, breaks, and condition.
die rust Rust that has accumulated on a die that was not stored properly. Often such rust was polished away, so that only the deeply recessed parts of the die still exhibited it.
Die rust - Pitting or roughness appearing on a coin as a result of that coin having been struck by a rusted die. Die scratch - Raised line on the surface of a coin, caused by a scratch in the coinage die.

In addition to this die rust, the overall quality of strike was poor. These coins looked worn as soon as they left the die, and even a short stint in circulation left them with a wretched appearance.
This applies to planchet laminations, lint marks, die rust, die wear, or practically any other mint caused defect. (Note: Minor die scratches and clashed dies are not usually considered to be serious defects, and hardly affect the grade, if at all.
Rust Marks - A coin that has been struck with dies that have begun to rust or corode will show pitting after being struck and the marks are often called die rust marks.
