DIE STATE Distinct state in the life of a die. The die state will vary from new to unusable and may include different states of disrepair such as cracked, chipped, rusted, broken, etc.

This piece was struck from dies that had already clashed and been lapped, or polished, equivalent to Bowers state II (and our consignor's die state III).

The top set of images is the mintmark from an 1882-O/S Morgan Dollar graded NGC AU55 VAM-3 Early Die State, while the lower set of images is the mintmark from an 1882-O/S graded ANACS AU55 VAM-3 (not EDS).

The terms "type," "variety" and "die state" are commonly encountered in the coin collecting community, so all are defined here. "Subtype," also defined, is encountered less frequently, but should be used more widely, Coin World staff believes.

Often dies clash and are polished, crack, break, etc., resulting in different stages of the die. These are called die states. Some coins have barely distinguishable die states, while others go through multiple distinctive ones.

There are three die states for BL 24 (A-C) and no listing for BL 27 (apparently that item was removed from the Charlton list after the numbering was finalized).

PROBLEM: The most trivial die varieties, repunched mint marks (RPMs), double dies, repunched dates and even die states command additional money and additional requirements on the part of the collector's knowledge.

Striking quality varies with die states, and dies were often used far beyond their prime. Many surviving coins show varying degrees of wear, and both mechanical damage and active corrosion readily attack the soft copper.

Many of the "doubled die" coins you see (struck after 1997) for sale are merely strike doubled (or MDD) coins and not worth a premium. This is especially true of the so called Doubled Die state quarter.
