Die VarietyEach die exhibits minute differences. A die variety is the coin variety created by a specific obverse and reverse die. When the obverse and/or reverse dies are changed a new variety is created.
Die variety collecting is very active in the fields of half cents, large cents, and half dollars in particular, and to a lesser extent with half dimes, dimes, and quarters. Early silver dollars probably finish last in the popularity parade.
Die variety identification of early dimes started late. Most die varieties are identified by the position of the date, the spacing and alignment of stars, the size of 10 C. and the exact position of letters above the ends of the motto scroll.

What is a die variety?
A variation of the normal design that makes a specific example stand out from normal struck coins. Since the die variety is on the die, the flaw is reproducible on every coin struck from that pair of dies.
If you have a die variety that is not listed in these books, it does not mean the coin is a counterfeit. It only means you have a 99.99% chance that it is a counterfeit coin.

Collected as type coins, by date and by die variety, Coronet cents are a fascinating series. For the variety specialist, the standard reference is Howard Newcomb's United States Large Cents 1816-1857.

This is a scarce die variety of the coin, with only around 200,000 manufactured. It is well worth looking out for in your change as they can still be found, and they are worth $20-30 in average circulated condition.
