The $20 gold coin shown here is the only known specimen of its kind and is among the rarest of United States coins.

1933 Double Eagles
The twenty dollar gold coin, known as a Double Eagle, was a child of the California Gold Rush, and the massive shipments of ore sent back East. The first Double Eagles were issued to the public in 1850.

Double Eagle - Official terminology of the $20 Gold piece which is twice the denomination of the 'eagle' or $10 gold piece. The eagle and the dollar were the basis of the U.S. currency system up until the early 1970s.

The double eagle's obverse features a full-length portrait of Liberty grasping a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. She is shown in full stride with rays of sunlight behind her, the word LIBERTY above her and the U. S.

Double eagles of the 1850-1907 years are of the Liberty Head type and are the work of James B. Longacre, who produced many other designs of the mid-19th century.
