1933 Double Eagles
The twenty dollar gold coin, known as a Double Eagle, was a child of the California Gold Rush, and the massive shipments of ore sent back East. The first Double Eagles were issued to the public in 1850.

The 1933 Double Eagles are Ordered to be Destroyed: It became illegal for private citizens to own gold coins, unless they clearly had a collectible value. This law was enacted during desperate times to prevent the hoarding of gold currency.

Double eagles of the 1850-1907 years are of the Liberty Head type and are the work of James B. Longacre, who produced many other designs of the mid-19th century.

Double Eagle - Official terminology of the $20 Gold piece which is twice the denomination of the 'eagle' or $10 gold piece. The eagle and the dollar were the basis of the U.S. currency system up until the early 1970s.

Double Eagles:
Only 265 Type One Liberty Head double eagles were made in the Proof format and I would be surprised if more than three to four dozen exist. The Type Two issues are also very rare with a total mintage of only 335 Proofs.

This "Double Eagle" gold coin was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens who also designed Indian Head $10 Gold which also circulated from 1907 - 1933. This magnificent coin is considered by many to be the most beautiful American coin ever minted.

In a society where an ounce of gold was found in $20 double eagle, the premium on gold hit 162. In other words, it took $32 in silver or paper to buy $20 in gold. In three weeks Fisk and Gould raked in millions and destroyed several competitors.
