Edge varieties

Numismatic Edge NicksEducational notes

Both the standard issue and the plain edge varieties are found in thick and thin planchet versions. There are also three examples of the standard issue in silver rather than the usual copper.

Plain edge and lettered edge varieties are known in 1797. Lettered edge examples are very rare and seldom seen above Fine condition. One of the most prominent varieties in the series is from 1797 and shows a numeral 1 directly above the 1 in the date.

Exact mintage is unknown due to meltings at the Mint in 1907. The Wire Rim and Rolled Edge varieties are rare, quasi-pattern issues.
