EF-45 This is for "Extremely Fine" (the grade) and "45" (the numerical designation of the grade). Also called XF-45. About 95% of the original detail is still evident and the devices are sharp and clear. See also Extremely Fine.
603 1844 EF-45. Pleasing medium yellow with lighter lustrous patches around each star. Simply a very attractive coin for the type, a fact which belies its prohibitive rarity.
Buy a basic coin as a type; I recommend EF-45, MS-63, or Proof-63, depending upon your budget.
For example, a coin grader, unless they wish to be unorthodox, can give an Extremely Fine graded coin a numerical grade of EF-40 or EF-45. Someone who decided to use the numbers in between might be asked why they are doing unnecessary hair splitting.
The remaining examples went from Choice About Uncirculated down to EF-45. Gem examples of Philadelphia issues do exist, but only 1834 Plain 4, and to a lesser extent, 1836, are seen with any frequency.

Choice - An adjective used to describe an especially select specimen of a given grade. Thus, Choice EF-45 represents and especially select Extremely Fine coin (normal or typical Extremely Fine being EF-40).

In another example, from my specialty Charlotte Gold, an 1838-C half eagle trends for $5750 in EF-45 but jumps to $14,500 in AU-50.
