Carving into metal, engraving, at the depths these coins are stamped would be very time consuming and much more difficult than making a punch to make the die to make the coin. Sam, I think I'll disagree with you here.

 


Engraving / Engraver
The person responsible for the design and/or punches used for a particular numismatic item.

Engraving - Engraving of currency is a reverse process wher grooves are scraped into metal plates by the use of sharp instruments. Ink was applied over the copper plates and then the excess is removed. Only the ink in the grooves would remain.

Engraving - The engraving of the dies with the negative coin image.

Engraving / Engraver
Term used in cutting or punching a design into a DIE or HUB during the minting process.

An engraving technique which produces a slightly dulled effect on certain parts of a coin's design. The effect is produced by lightly sand blasting or etching that part of the design on the die.

An engraving or incised figure in a hard material depressed below the surface of the material.
IRIDESCENT
A multi-coloured blending or toning frequently found in older uncirculated coins. See also Toning, Thin Film Light Interference.

The engraving on the back of this $50 First Charter Period note depicts a rather religious scene of the embarkation of the Pilgrims.

Type of Engraving Process - How was the certificate made? By hand? By wood engraving? Steel engraving? Lithograph? Preprinted form?

The above engraving is from a large brass coin, of the legends and types on which the following is descriptive: -

Cruder in their engraving and manufacture, and far more exotic in their designs, Period Two gold pieces were collectable from their inception. They are thus more likely than the earlier coins to be found in unworn condition.

Later, die engraving became more sophisticated but the letters retained much of their original pattern. The medieval love of the ornate is well shown by the letters with exaggerated bowls, elaborate serifs and stalks.

The accompanying vignette portrait was taken at this time, while the large steel engraving is from a picture made some twenty years later.

Love token - A coin which has been altered by smoothing one or both surfaces and engraving initials, scenes, messages, etc., thereon.

Almost all of the genuine gold charms are very thin and vary greatly in quality of engraving; they feature Indians, George Washington and birds among other devices on the obverse with a great variety of reverses.

The 1815/2 overdate is the only 1815-dated coin of the series, and fewer than 10 of the 1817/4 overdate are known. Many overdates, engraving errors, and letter and number size/ shape variations have been catalogued, ...

The reason for first engraving the design on plaster is because plaster gives a better finish than other materials used. Also, any errors made can be corrected at this stage with plaster. This is impossible on rubber resin or epoxy.

Little details of this nature join the style of engraving to produce the signature of the team that produced these coins.
