ANA World's Fair of Money Approaching
I just received Chuck D'Ambra's newsletter and learned that the ANA will be holding their annual World's Fair of Money show. Here are the details.

The World Money Fair is an international bourse of coins. A bourse is where dealers, collectors and the public to buy, sell and trade coins.

Fair: a grading term for a coin that is so worn that it is barely identifiable as to type.
fake: a counterfeit coin meant to deceive.
fantasy: a coin that has nothing to do with reality.

Fair - The grade FR-2.
Fake - A counterfeit or altered coin.
Fantasy - An object having the physical characteristics of a coin, ...

Fair-2 or FR-2 (Fair) - Type and date are barely discernable, but otherwise the coin is damaged or extremely worn.

Fair (Fair) - You can identify the coin as to its type.
There may be holes, it might be bent, or it might just have a LOT of honest wear. You may or may not see the date depending on the type and the nature of the wear.

Fair The adjective corresponding to the grade FR-2. In this grade, there is heavy wear with the lettering, devices, and date partially visible. See also FR-2.
fake Slang for a counterfeit or altered coin.

fair - A heavily worn coin. Date may be only partially visible. F-2 is one of the lowest grades on the scale of 1-70 (70 being flawless).

Fair-2 (FR2): Just slightly more detail than PO-1. Much of the lettering and detail will be worn away
About Good-3 (AG3): This coin is flat with little detail remaining and with the rims worn down into the lettering.

Fair / Poor
A coin in either "Fair" or "Poor" condition is basically just a slick round piece of metal with a faint outline of some shape which might be a nose, ear, or maybe just a ding in the metal.

Fair - A grade where the coin has seen much wear and it is only just discernible what the coin is. Collectors usually stay away from this grade unless the coin or note is especially rare or expensive.

Fr = Fair Wear is now about 86% - 95%, and in some places, the design may be fully worn away. Coins of this type are rarely collected as they are fairly unattractive.

Fair: A very worn piece. May be bent or corroded as well. Poor: An excessively worn and highly undesirable piece unless it is of the greatest rarity, in which case it may serve as a temporary space-filler.

To be fair, collectors have legitimate cause for being concerned about some toned coins. In his video How to Tell Artificial Toning on Coins, available for loan from the American Numismatic Association, Campbell says the following are AT tip-offs: ...

Acronym for Fair.
Franklin half-dollar
The half-dollar struck from 1948 until 1963 designed by John Sinnock. The coin featured Ben Franklin on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse.

Bacchus "ever fair and ever young" is generally represented in sculpture and on coins without beard, crowned with vine leaves. He holds the thyrsus (see the word) in one hand, and a bunch of grapes in the other.

FR stands for fair which means that coin is a little bit better than the worst state. It is nearly the worst of the coin grades, and it indicates very little is discernable on the coin, but the type of coin it was can be determined.

The key point being, that the buyer needs to know about anything that was done to the coin in order to make a fair judgment when making a purchase decision. replica - a coin copy or reproduction. Sometimes called a copy of facsimile.

This evolved for a time to the letter grading system of Basal State (almost never abbreviated), Fair (Fr), Almost Good (AG), Good (G), Very Good (VG), Fine (F), Very Fine (VF), Extra Fine (EF or XF), Almost Uncirculated (AU), ...

GOLD RUSH: Are Prices for Old Jewelry and Coins Fair?
Call it a Des Moines gold rush. Plenty of people are rushing to the Treasure Hunter's Road Show at two area hotels to trade in their old jewelry, coins and antiques for cash.

These rulers had a fair degree of independence in governing their subject, collecting taxes and maintaining law and order. Many states issued their own distinct coinage, currency notes and postal stamps.

The 1945 quarter value is a minimum of $2.65. A fair price for an old coin that is normally found relatively worn.
It is the silver content that brings the value to $2.65. Most circulated Washington quarters in the 1940's trade at or near this price.

FR2 - FR - ANA grading standard meaning Fair level 2 to fair condition.

Fractional Coin - A coin, the face value of which is a fractional unit of the denominated currency, generally minted of silver.

There are several other requirements to become a PNG coin dealer, including such things as promising to pay fair prices to folks who sell their items, promptly delivering coins which have been paid for, ...

If you want to have a rough idea if you are getting a fair deal, you must know how to identify and grade the coins you purchase. I have separate pages that introduce these subjects, though these skills take quite a long time to develop fully.

Note: Very crude style - I'm attributing this specimen to Johannes with a fair amount of reservation, however, the portrait resembles Johannes and some of the Rome mint products are very crude.

Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, Extra Fine, Uncirculated.
The first three are to be avoided as unreadable for an exhibit like this. The last two are usually avoided as being too expensive and unnecessary for an educational exhibit.

Deal with the best: Buy only from an individual or firm with an established reputation for integrity and fair dealing. Investigate thoroughly. Some of the phoniest outfits have the smoothest-talking salesmen and the fanciest brochures.

The more you know about your coins, the more you will know for a fact that what we offer you for your coins is fair and what we charge for our coins is also fair. But you cannot do this without at least one or two books.
