In economics, fiat currency or fiat money is money that enjoys legal tender status derived from a declaratory fiat or an authoritative order of the government.

You may be driven to gloom and despair when you come across many hypotheses on the dangers of Fiat currency, whereby central banks are printing money and devaluing currencies be that USD, GBP or the Euro.

The book looks at the impact taking our currency off the gold standard had, making the US dollar a fiat currency. The dollar, while the legal tender of the government, no longer had any intrinsic value.

Whoever accepted the exchange was left with the less-trusted fiat currency. At the time United States Notes were issued, this was a serious concern, as the government sought to strike a balance between coin shortages and fiat currency.

The value of the metal(s) contained in a numismatic item. The United States issues contained their intrinsic value in metal until 1933 for gold coins and 1964 for silver coins. Modern U.S. coins are termed fiat currency (see Fiat currency).

Unlike Demand Notes, the Legal Tender notes were a pure fiat currency and could not be redeemed in gold coins, nor would the government receive them at par (face value) in payment of customs duties.
