Fifty pence coin (regular issue, reverse) The British decimal fifty pence (50p) coin - often pronounced "fifty pee" - was issued on October 14, 1969 in the run-up to decimalisation to replace the ten shilling note.
The fifty pence coin originally weighed 13.5 grams and had a diameter of 30 mm.
To celebrate its entry into the European Economic Community (E.E.C.), the United Kingdom issued a special commemorative fifty pence coin, with a reverse design of nine hands.
