Numismatic FlatFlat luster

flat edge: variety of 1907 $20 "High Relief" gold coins that has a flat border. The edge on this coin is actually lettered!
flat luster: reduced brilliance due to dark toning, impaired surfaces, or cleaning.

flat edge
Term referring to the particular specimens of High Reliefs that do not have a wire edge.
flat luster ...

Struck at Antioch in Syria (possibly from dies prepared at Rome??) this 30mm bronze coin of Philip II (247-248 AD) not only is perfectly round but shows a flat edge with squared corners (light line on the diagonal view).

The larger of the two strikes exhibits an area with a flat edge known as a "Chain Edge," a reference alluding to the "linking" of this coin to another.

In addition the milled edge can either be 'wire edge' or 'flat edge'. The 'flat edge' uses the full thickness of the coin, while the 'wire edge' seems to taper to a comparatively narrow section of reeding, and was only used during 1992.

Plain edge
A smooth, flat edge seen mainly on a small-denomination coinage.
Planchet
The blank metal disk, which becomes a coin when struck under high pressure between two dies.

The question of the day at Ask Yahoo was Why do dimes and quarters have ridged edges while nickels and pennies have flat edges?
