Flowing Hair and Draped Bust Dollars 1794 to 1804
The Flowing Hair Dollar were minted from 1794 and 1795 and are very rare in any condition.

Flowing Hair half dollars are slightly larger and heavier than their modern counterparts. Their authorized fineness is marginally lower, but their actual fineness is virtually the same, and thereby hangs a tale.

Flowing Hair dollars are coveted collectibles, not only because of their great rarity but also because they possess such a powerful link with the birth of both the nation and U.S. coinage.

OBVERSE: Flowing Hair design with six curls, the third curl weak. First star close to 1 in date. Second star near first curl, but does not touch it.

Chain Cent The popular name for the Flowing Hair Chain cent of 1793, the first coins struck in the newly occupied Mint building. Chapman Proof Those 1921 Morgan dollar Proofs supposedly struck for coin dealer Henry Chapman.

There are also large and small cast bronze pieces of Olbia (aes grave) with a head of Athena, of a goddess with flowing hair to front, with an ear of corn above her forehead, or a Gorgoneion, on the obverse; ...

Undoubtedly one of the more interesting designs proposed for the dollar coin in recent years was the Flowing Hair Liberty Head Obverse / Eagle in Flight Reverse proposed by United States Mint Engraver, Frank Gasparro in 1977.

Recommendations for the Connoisseur: For the 1794-1795 Flowing Hair halves, I like VF-20 to EF-45. AU-50 to MS-63 coins are good values but are hard to find and are expensive.

Called the Flowing Hair Dollar, this first US Silver Dollar appeared during 1794. The obverse is a bust of Lady Liberty with free flowing hair and the reverse has a bald eagle encompassed by a wreath.

His wonderful Arethusa-head with flowing hair seems to have roused the emulation of the die-engravers of many cities, Catana, Croton, and Pandosia in the west, Larissa and Thebes in Central Greece, Aenus and Amphipolis in the north, ...

Alexander is depicted in fine style with flowing hair. Directly behind and probably meant to be a hair adornment is a tiny rose no larger than 2 millimeters. Alexander's Hair is done on three levels which adds to the illusion of depth.

Logies in his recent book "The Flowing Hair Dollars of 1794, A Historical and Population Census Study," published August 2004. Provenance should also note that the coin was once donated in 1926 by Louis B.

Stellas are very rare today, with the highest mintage being 415 pieces for the 1879 Flowing Hair piece. They were all struck as proofs and none were placed in circulation so most pieces encountered today are usually in a high state of preservation.

Two types were created; Barber's Flowing Hair design, and the rarer Coiled Hair type by Morgan. The $4.00 Stella, Latin for "star" is named for the five-pointed star on the reverse.

Chain Cent - The popular name for the Flowing Hair large cent of 1793. They were the first coins struck in the new Mint building in Philadelphia.

Lady Liberty started out with flowing hair, and then became a draped bust, then a capped bust. The eagle also underwent several makeovers. It began as a small eagle that many thought looked too much like a pigeon.

That's why there is no such thing as a Flowing Hair dime, because by 1796, that design had been retired. Clearly, the dime was not considered a high priority coin by the U.S. Mint.

Wreath cent Common name for the second large cent type of 1793. Complaints about the Chain cent led to the redesign resulting in the Flowing Hair with wreath reverse type.

During his tenure, he is credited with designing many MEDALS, plaques and PATTERN coinage but is best remembered for his 1879 Flowing Hair $4 STELLA, 1883 Liberty nickel and the dime, quarter and half-dollars issued between 1892-1916.

He is said to have had 'full-flushed rose-red cheeks' that contrasted sharply with 'the milky whiteness of his flowing hair and beard.' His hands were white with long thin fingers described as 'transparent.

could obtain a Stella from the Mint Bureau at any price, looped specimens commonly adorned the bosoms of Washington's most famous madams, who owned the bordellos favored by those same congressmen. Today there are several dozen 1879 Flowing Hair ...

Today there are several dozen 1879 Flowing Hair Stellas with telltale traces of removal of those same loops, whose owners probably sometimes wish the coins could talk.
