Forgeries
In the preceding paragraphs the production of a coin has been followed from its beginning as an artist's model until it lies in a bag awaiting distribution.
Some forgeries are plated metal of poor quality, but others are made of brass. These can sometimes be identified by a slight difference in colour to the normal.
High grade forgeries of florins were circulated in 1926, 1927, 1928 and 1931. These spurious coins appear to have been struck rather than cast and had a silver content similar to that of genuine florins.

Counterfeiting was rampant, and in 1771 the utterance of counterfeit copper coin became a felony; this however had little effect and for the next twenty years or so the majority of copper so-called coins in circulation were forgeries.
They are not generally regarded as forgeries since they were smaller than standard issues and probably functioned as small change.

In 1897, Sudan used Egyptian stamps, though there were numerous forgeries.
Kitchener looked for a means to print stamps that were specific to Sudan. An artist proposed an illustration of the Abu Simbel temples for 25 guineas.

Fakes of modern and ancient coins sold on eBay as authentic coins are a frequent problem, though if you follow the online coin discussion groups, these coin forgeries are frequently exposed.
The most widely publicized forgeries are the small silvers of Apollonia Ponitika that were made in modern Bulgaria and are associated with a craftsman named "Slavey." Most interesting is that these phony coins fooled the dealers twice in ten years.

It is interesting that the Sear catalog of Byzantine Coins specifically mentions the existence of gilded bronze contemporary forgeries of this type.
Timothy Woodbridge and William Cradock, probably made the later types, including a final issue dated 1739. Higley tokens are very rare in any condition and always bring four- or five-figure prices. Forgeries were made of them many years ago.
