Gallienus first struggled against the Germans on the Rhine and Danube, resulting in the acquisition of the title Germanicus Maximus five times from 255-258.
Gallienus was the son of the Emperor Valerian and his co-ruler. When Valerian was proclaimed emperor by the military and approved by a senate pleased to vote in one of their own, they also accepted his son as co-ruler.
The reign of Gallienus, both as joint emperor and during his sole reign, was the final chapter in the progressive debasement of the antoninianus.
After Aemilian's revolt he invaded Italy, and when Aemilian was assassinated Valerian and his son Gallienus were proclaimed joint emperors. Valerian went to the East, where he suppressed the rebellion of Uranius Antoninus and restored order in Syria.

Earlier sources such as Stevenson (Dictionary of Roman Coins) states that he was the son of Valerian I, and the half-brother of Gallienus, and also states that many coins of the two Valerians were previously wrongly allocated.

Greek god of the wine, also known in Greece as Dionysos, on old roman coins with a whine cup, and a panther (cougar) on the coins of emperor Gallienus (253-268) only the cougar is shown, together with the text LIBERO P. CONS. AVG.
This coin was gradually debased and reached its lowest during the reign of Gallienus (253-68) when it was a copper coin with a thin silver coating which quickly wore off.
