Gem
Adjectival description applied to Mint State and Proof-65 coins. It also is used for higher grades and as a generic term for a superb coin.
Gem Uncirculated (Gem Unc)

The adjectival equivalent of Mint State 65 or 66.

Gem: an exceptionally beautiful and well struck coin.
Gem Uncirculated: a grade range of 65 to 66 on a scale of 1 to 70.
Gobrecht dollar: U.S. Silver Dollars designed by Christian Gobrecht and struck from 1836 to 1839.

Gem Mint State (MS-65)
There is a definite look of quality to an MS-65 coin that easily distinguishes it from lower grades of Mint State. On initial examination, with the naked eye, the piece will appear nearly perfect.

Gem/Gem BU
Used in a generic sense to describe a high-quality coin. In a more specific definition, "gem" refers to a coin GRADING 65 or 66 on the SHELDON SCALE.

Gem Proof 1896 Double Eagle
1918 1896 Proof-65 (PCGS). Another memorable gem coin, a piece which comes about as close to perfection as we have ever seen on a Proof of this date.

GEM UNCIRCULATED: A flawless uncirculated note. It is bright, crisp, well centered, free from any traces of handling. and has no folds, creases or bent corners.

gem: a generic term used for an excellent coin
grade: coins are graded on a numeric scale to represent the quality and preservation of the coin. This scale is used to describe condition. It can also be used to establish prices.

Gem Uncirculated (Mint State-65)
With the exception of one issue, the 1851-C gold dollar, Mint State-65 coins from the Charlotte Mint are virtually unknown.

Glow Lines - Microscopic lines in the surface of a coin resulting from the outward flow of metal during the striking process.

Gem specimens of all four issues exist, but many stellas saw use as jewelry or pocket pieces and show impairments of some kind. Friction on the design will first show on the face of Liberty on the obverse and on the star on the reverse.

Gem (3)
Prior to 1987, Gem was equated by the ANA to a coin grading 67 on a 70 point scale. Simultaneously, other coin market activists equated Choice to 65 or 66 on a 70 point scale.

A gem example of this enigmatic pattern. It is just like the regular Copper-Nickel issue, but on a thin planchet. This is a R7 pattern and is quite unusual.

MS-65 A Gem Brilliant Uncirculated coin. . An above average Uncirculated coin specimen. This coin may be brilliant or lightly toned with very few contact marks on the surface or rim.

LEG XIII GEM
Legion XIII Gemina was stationed at Apulum in Dacia. It is important for collectors to distinguish carefully issues of this scarce legion from the common Legion XIIII Gemina Marti Victrix.

Note that gem uncirculated Barber, Walking Liberty, and Franklin half dollars are worth considerably more than their silver value.

At first he proposed but two: Choice and Gem. Apostles, like Q. David Bowers, hoped to affix a third: Select. However, Select failed to adhere. Then, when God's adjectives proved inadequate, a numbering system was devised.

Finding Gem British coins are especially difficult because of this problem. CAM Short for Cameo. Also, PCGS grading suffix used for 1950 and later Proofs that meet cameo standards.

This brilliant gem, the production of the early Greek mint, is from the collection of the late Mr. Abraham Edmonds, of Castle Street, Southwark; and by the special permission of Mrs. Edmonds, here engraved.

Some form of rotary drill used with a slurry or paste made of gem dust could accomplish the basic engraving. Further "sanding" and polishing could refine the image. How these celators accomplished the minute detail without magnification is a mystery.

Originality and attractive surfaces will weigh heavy for a gem grade as do marks and location. Must be well struck for date with very good luster.

'Improved' gem graded pennies QE2 pennies that they want $200 for will be worth $20. I think you're seeing this sort of phenomenon on Ebay right now.

1909-P VDB LINCOLN CENT, ANACS MS-66 RED, premium gem, with frosty mint blazing fresh full red and satin surfaces. They rarely get much better. For example, as a few years ago PCGS/ANACS/NGC had graded very few higher, and only at MS-67.

Mint State was called 60; Choice, 65; and Gem became 70. Later, 70 transmuted into Superb Gem (a glorious new adjective). Finally, the ultimate grade of 70 evolved to mean God's Own Perfection.

I am reminded of a Maryland gentleman who wanted a gem example of an MCMVII (1907) High Relief $20. In 1955, when the market price was around $300, he wanted to pay $200. When the price rose to $1,000, he would have been a buyer at $800.

Gem Uncirculated was roughly equivalent in usage to BU at that time.

Like the time a dozen years ago when, at an otherwise ho-hum convention, I plucked from the inventory of one of America's shrewdest and most successful dealers a pair of obvious specimen proof 1927 nickels - marked gem uncirculated and a few hundred ...

The coins were graded as Choice Extremely Fine, Choice BU and Gem BU. The owner of these coins was an experienced collector and a skilled grader. In my opinion, all the coins were correctly graded using the terms and measures of the time.

A quick dip in Jewel Luster produced the most stunning, blazing white semi-prooflike gem early U.S. silver coin I had ever seen! Really, nothing had changed except the eye-appeal factor.

* Brilliant Uncirculated is the best, but terms such as choice BU, gem BU, select BU and premium BU may add more worth to your divine treasure. We know of a choice BU 15-piece silver proof set selling for $149.50 and well worth the purchase price.

This grade is also called "Gem" or "Gem Mint State" or "Gem BU." There may be scattered marks, hairlines or other defects, but they will be minor. Any spots on copper coins will also be minor.

However, when prices for Gem quality coins began soaring in the late 1970s, some unscrupulous operators no longer delivered circulated coins that had been whizzed or were sliders. A new pattern emerged.

Gem - Or Mint State 65. A coin that is well struck, has above average eye appeal with minimal bagmarks.
Superb Gem - Or Mint State 67. A coin with tremendous eye appeal. Must be fully struck and have very few noticeable bag marks.

The last 3 grades in this list are approximately equivalent overall, but they may have held a higher or lower meaning to a particular dealer or auction firm.

Sixty is the base grade in this area, 63 is the lowest designation for "choice," 64 choice +, 65 the lowest category of "gem," 66 is gem +, 67 is "superb gem" and anything 67 and higher, are coins to dream about.

Should we buy only choice, gem uncirculated coins? Like so many things in coin collecting, it's a matter of opinion. Each collector sets his or her goals and goes on from there.
