Governments have long used coins as a way of recording important events. Coins are rarely destroyed and therefore act as permanent record of the occasion.

 


Gold commemorative - Any of the eleven gold coins struck from 1903 until 1926 to honor a person, place, or event. Also, any of the modern United States commemorative gold issues sometimes referred to as modern gold commems.

This souvenir gold commemorative is the one of the two varieties of the 1922 Grant $1 Gold Commemorative. Today nearly all known Grant gold dollars are in varying degrees of Mint State, evidence that very few were ever sold to the general public.
