1865 Gold Dollar
For many years my favorite 'sleeper' date in the Gold Dollar series was the 1863. After a long period of neglect, the 1863 has been discovered and it now sells for levels well in excess of current Trends.

The gold dollar and double eagle-the smallest and largest regular-issue gold coins in U.S. history-both had their genesis in the coinage act of March 3, 1849. And both were designed by James Barton Longacre, the U.S.

Type II Gold Dollars are scarcer than either of the other types, and in average condition are worth about $200. In perfect uncirculated condition Type Twos are very rare and can bring $70,000 or more.

The first gold dollars made in the United States were privately minted issues produced about 1830 by a German immigrant named Alt Christoph Bechtler.

The Indian Head gold dollar was introduced in late 1854, after it became evident that the previous gold dollar coin (the Liberty Head type) was being lost a lot due to its small size AND often suffering the abuse of being sliced in two, ...

The scarcest of the gold dollar series, the Type II Indian Head Gold Dollar features the image of Miss Liberty wearing a feathered Indian headdress on the obverse and a wreath encircling the denomination and date on the reverse.

For a period of 40 years between 1849 and 1889, the U.S. also minted gold coins of a one-dollar denomination, the smallest denomination of gold currency ever produced in the United States.

A Charlotte gold dollar graded Mint State-63 will show a sharp strike and will have very good luster. The surfaces will be clean to the naked eye but light magnification will reveal some small marks or hairlines either in the fields or on the devices.

The 1861-D gold dollars were struck after the Mint was seized, the mintage figure for this rare issue is not listed in Mint records and has been estimated at 1000 to 1,500 examples.

Well as I went through the October 20th edition I found an 1850-C gold dollar graded NGC-61. Well out of my league but I made a note of it anyway.

Indian Head
In coin collecting terms the preferred name for the 5-cent coin often called Buffalo nickel. Indian Head cents, gold dollars, gold $3 coins, $5 half eagles, $10 eagles and $20 double eagles exist.

Orange-Peel
The dimple-textured fields seen on many Proof gold coins; their surfaces resemble those of an orange, hence the descriptive term. Some Mint State gold dollars and three-dollar gold coins exhibit this effect to some degree.

The 1933 US 20 dollar gold coin (known as the double eagle) exists only in very small numbers. Over 450,000 were minted, but never officially circulated, because of the end of the use of gold dollars in 1933.

In that year America went off the gold standard and since then all the necessary backing for its note issue has been in the form of bullion. The issue of gold dollars was of a much shorter duration, they were only struck until 1889.
