Gordian III - Boy King Gordian III became Emperor at the end of the confusion of 238 AD. That he was largely a figurehead is made obvious by his young age (about 15) but, compared to other 'boy kings', Gordian did a good job as ruler of Rome.

Gordian III (AD 238-244) imitations Some are typical struck silver-plated types, some are cast (below). Most are radiates. Surprisingly, some are imitations of laureate denarii (below). Three have Philip I and Philip II reverses.

Marcus Antonius Gordianus Pius (January 20 225-244), known in English as Gordian III, was Roman emperor from 238 to 244. Gordian was the son of Antonia Gordiana, daughter of Gordian I and sister of Gordian II.
The new standard denomination, the antoninianus, was issued in ever increasing quantities, from the reign of Gordian III (A.D. 238-244) through to Diocletian's great reform of the coinage in the final decade of the 3rd century.
