Grade vs. Price
Of the various considerations which help to determine the value of a coin, the grade of the piece is one of the most important factors.
Net Grades
Net grading is a term used when referring to coins that have problems. For example, a coin might have XF wear, but have been scratched, corroded, cleaned, etc.

A grade of Proof-64 was assigned to this Original Specimen of the 1804 Dollar. The coin is noted for having beautiful blue and iridescent hues on the obverse and a lighter, mostly white reverse. The estimated value of this Dollar is 1.

Coins are Graded
Coin Collecting is one of my great passions. There is nothing I enjoy more than talking to my clients, all day long, about something I love to do. It's more like play, than a job.
The first reason, and this applies to all slabbed coins, is that a slabbed graded coin is now protected from further damage. Imagine taking out your best coin, a 1942-S Walking Liberty in what you believe to be MS-67 condition.

Grade As in any collecting field, grade is of prime importance when evaluating a coin. Coins can either be circulated, uncirculated (or Mint State), or Proof (specially prepared for sale to collectors).
Grade Accurately For Highest Value
The second half of your value investigation is judging the condition of your buffalo nickel and determine its grade.
As seen in the chart a difference in "Grade" produces a large swing in the 1913 nickel value.
Grade - Condition assigned to a coin mainly in an effort to determine its relative value.
Grader - A person who evaluates the condition of coins.
Grading - The process of evaluation leading to assignment of a grade.

To familiarize the public with the Euro, Italy issued this coin in the towns of Fiesole and Pontassieve good only for 1997 and 1998.

grade - A rating or description that indicates the condition and wear of a circulated coin and also describes of degree of perfection for uncirculated and proof coins. Currently, the Sheldon scale is used.
grader An individual who evaluates the condition of coins.
grading The process of numerically quantifying the condition of a coin.
Grade:
A carefully constructed series of guidelines to determine the condition and thus the rarity and value of a coin, banknote or other piece of numismatic material.
Gem:
A relatively flawless piece of superlative quality.
Grades
Mint State (MS)
Mint State coins have been preserved exactly as they were struck. These command a substantial premium over other coins of the same type. I don't own any ancient coins that can be fairly described as mint state.
Grade
The numerical or adjectival condition of a coin. See also: SHELDON SCALE, NGC, PCGS
Grain
A unit of measurement equal to six hundred and forty-eight ten-thousandths (.0648) of a GRAM. Used in determining FINENESS of a coin.
Grade: Rating which indicates how much a coin has worn from circulation. The American Numismatic Association (ANA) scale measures - or grades - coins from "About Good - 3" to "Perfect Uncirculated -70".
Grade - The condition or amount of wear that a coin has received. The ANA scale measures or grades coins from About Good-3 to Perfect Uncirculated-70.
Hairlines - Minute lines or scratches on coins, usually caused by cleaning or polishing.

Grade: Coins are graded on a numeric scale to represent the quality and preservation of the coin. This scale is used to describe condition. It can also be used to establish prices.
Grade/Grading - One of several terms summarizing the overall condition of a coin or other numismatic item.
Greysheet - the Coin Dealer Newsletter, a price guide for U.S. coins intended for dealer-to-dealer transactions.
Grades in web auctions. Many sellers on eBay do not know coins well and grossly overgrade their coins. One regularly says things like "Fantasic EF" when others would call it merely Fine. Look at the scans.

Grade - The name of the condition of the coin depending on how much wear is in evidence. Grading coins properly is not easy and usually is the main factor of a coins price and demand.
Grades Below Uncirculated
For the purpose of conformity we have settled with the adjectives "a" for "almost" and "g" for "good" to describe coins which are "not quite" or "a little better than" the main grade.
Grade - A verbal, or in the United States, a numerical way of trying to describe the quality of a coin. Because the price of a coin is in many ways dependent on the grade, some individuals will try to over state the grade of a coin.
no-grade Term applied to a coin returned from a third-party grading service that was not encapsulated because of varying reasons. (This could be for cleaning, damage, questionable authenticity, etc.) ...
Low grade (LG): Worn all over the coin. High spots are worn but date is visible and Low spot can be seen over all. In general condition for age.
Fine (F): Worn over whole area, but only the highest spots are worn completely through.

COIN GRADE
Coins are graded into one of two general categories circulated or uncirculated. Within each are a number of grades which further define its condition which in turn determines its price.
High-Grade MCMVII $20
1957 MCMVII (1907) High Relief. Wire Rim. MS-64. Edge repair on reverse rim at 4:00. A high-grade piece, although the repair reduces its value to a somewhat lower level.
Split Grade - Different grades for the obverse and reverse sides.
Spot - Short for spot price; Small area of corrosion or foreign substance.
Spot Price - The market price for immediate delivery of a commodity, such as a precious metal.
Low Grade 1863 or 1864-S Eagles
These are two of the absolutely rarest dates in the entire Liberty Head eagle series. The 1863 has an original mintage of just 1,248 business strikes while the 1864-S has a mintage of 2,500.
FLEX-O-GRADE
The grading standards we use for coins today are not the same standards in place fifteen years ago. We now have more grades. When I first became a professional numismatist numerical grading was not used.

Grade - The condition or amount of wear that the specimen has received. Generally, the less wear a coin/note has received, the more valuable it is.

A flat piece of metal issued by a governmental authority, having a distinctive stamp and a fixed weight and value, for use as legal tender.
Grade where most of a coin's detail is worn away. Some detail is , but not sharp.

A grade that is usually one level higher than the market grade; refers to a coin that is "pushed" a grade, such as an EF/AU coin (corresponding to 45+) sold as AU-50.
commercial strike
A synonym for regular strike or business strike.
Net grades (lowers a coin's grade for minor problems) but does not note it on the holder.
Bodybags (doesn't grade) problem coins (major problems) -- no refund of fee.
The grade of a coin is a technical description of the amount of wear on a coin, although it is slightly more complicated than that. Many ancient coins were struck from worn dies, and so appear to have wear on them the moment they were struck.

Almost Good - 3 on the Sheldon grading scale.
Coin Grade - Coin grade refers to the amount of wear a coin receives from being in circulation.
Mint Mark - A mint mark is a small letter inscription identifying the US mint where a coin comes from.
