The Half Disme of 1792: Introduction
As mentioned in the section on the Getz "Half Dollar" Pattern, in 1791 Robert Morris drafted legislation for a national coinage that provided for a presidential portrait on the coins.

Half Cent Values
Half cent values start at thirty dollars each for a well worn coin. Not a bad minimum value for an old coin.
Find a "better date" in you box, for example an 1802, 1811 or 1831 and your half cent values increase dramatically.

The 1861-D half eagle is a very historic coin and very popular among collectors. The U.S. Government minted 1597 half eagles before the Confederacy seized the Mint on April 8, 1861.

No Half Cents were issued in 1799.
The Draped Bust design appeared from 1800 to 1808, but no Half Cents were struck in 1801. The rarest date of this design type is the 1802, all of which were struck on cut-down Large Cents.

The annual Temple tax paid by each adult male Jew was a half shekel of silver (Exodus 30:12-15). This coin, designed in Tyre and minted there and in Jerusalem, was acceptable at the Temple to pay that tax, but coins from other locations were not.

The Half Dollar
Silver dollars are big and shiny, but for over 150 years the half dollar was really America's most important silver coin. The first half dollars were delivered from the US Mint on December 1, 1794.

The Barber Half has a head of Liberty facing right and has its mint mark on the reverse under the eagle. The Walking Liberty design features a full figure of Liberty facing left.

The Charlotte and Dahlonega half eagles in the Milas collection included some of the most famous (and most mind-blowing) high grade pieces known. It's hard for me to pick a favorite as there were so many fantastic single coins.

The liberty bell, which had been on the reverse of Franklin's half-dollar, was replaced by the eagle from the presidential seal except during 1975 and 1976, the nation's 200th birthday.

Be careful when obtaining large quantities of rolls of half-dollars that the rolls are not short. It is not unheard of to be short a half-dollar per roll, and this can become significant if obtaining multiple rolls.

Half-Angel or Angelet
Although no coin of value one mark or 160 pence (13s 4d) was ever issued, the mark was popularly used as money of account. A coin of forty pence, being a quarter of a mark, was much liked by merchants.
