No Half Cents were issued in 1799.
The Draped Bust design appeared from 1800 to 1808, but no Half Cents were struck in 1801. The rarest date of this design type is the 1802, all of which were struck on cut-down Large Cents.

 


Half cents were minted only sporadically after 1811. An order from Jonathan Elliott & Sons of Baltimore, Maryland was responsible for reestablishing production of the coin in 1825, but by the end of 1829, over 800, ...

Half Cents dated 1800 were the first to bear Scot's Draped Bust design. This amply proportioned Liberty was based on a drawing by the great artist Gilbert Stuart and portrayed a ranking Philadelphia society leader and beauty, Mrs. William Bingham.

The Half Cent Series and its varieties are covered by two books, the latest is Breen's ("B numbers") and earlier the standard reference was Cohen (C numbers). Also many key varieties are in Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins.

Half cents were minted only sporadically after 1811. An order from the merchant Washington Cilley was responsible for reestablishing production of the coin in 1831, though that year's mintage was very small, about 2,200 pieces.

Half cents of the 19th century: No half cents were struck bearing the dates 1798 and 1799. In 1800 a new motif, the Draped Bust style, made its appearance and was continued through the year 1808. Particularly scarce is the 1802 half cent.

The lowest-value coin denomination ever issued by the United States, representing one-two hundredth of a dollar. Half cents were struck from 1793 until the series was discontinued in 1857.

The half cent was struck from 1793 to 1857. Its primary purpose was to allow American money based on tenths to be exchanged for Spanish and Mexican coins that were divided by eighths. The US quarter was equal to the Spanish 2 reales ("ray-ah-less").

The half cent had the longest run of these particular coins, from 1793 to 1857, though it skipped a number of years because of a lack of demand or a shortage of copper, including the years 1812 through 1824 and 1836 through 1848.

The half cent was the lowest value ever issued by the United States. Even in those days of low prices, a half-cent piece was considered a nuisance; its coinage declined and it was discontinued altogether in 1857.

The half cent restrike of 1811 and the large cent restrikes of 1823 and "1804" come from this batch. They deceived few collectors but turned a profit anyway.

The Liberty Cap Half Cent where minted from 1794-1797, and during these times there where copper shortages. So, many of these coins where struck over a Talbot, Allum and Lee Token, because they where a cheaper acquisition of copper.

Although copper half cents and cents were coined as early as 1793, and silver coinage (half dollars and dollars) followed in 1794, it was not until 1795 that gold coins made their debut.

Liberty Head The design used on most U.S. gold coins from 1838 until 1908. This design was first employed by Christian Gobrecht, with later modifications by Robert Ball Hughes and James Longacre.

The next year, the half cent was changed to this design. This head was also copied by William Kneass for the quarter eagle and half eagle designs first struck in 1834. cleaned A term applied to a coin whose original surface has been removed.

The obverse of the minor coins (the half centavo and one centavo, both coined in bronze, and the copper-nickel five centavos) featured the semi-nude figure of an adolescent native, seated at an anvil and holding a hammer in his right hand.
