Seated Liberty half dimes of 1853 to 1855 display arrow heads at the date to indicate the coins were struck of the reduced weight of 1.24 grams (or 19.2 grains. Earlier half dimes have a weight of 1.34 grams.) of .900 fine silver.

Bust Half Dimes
There are a few 1794 half dimes known that have been categorized by NGC as Specimen strikings but the first true Proofs were made in 1829.

No half dimes were struck in 1798 and 1799. The coin was again minted in 1800 with the same Draped Bust obverse, but with a new reverse by Robert Scot that copied the heraldic eagle device from the Great Seal of the United States.

Half dimes in silver were made in this country from 1794 to 1873. They were eventually replaced by the nickel five-cent piece first minted in 1866.

Arrows half dimes are easily collected in all but the highest grades. There are no real "stoppers" in the three-year set, but the New Orleans coins are considerably more elusive and expensive than those from the Philadelphia Mint.

Two worn 1792 half dimes, or "disme" as it was originally spelled, also were sold at the convention for $14,950 and $69,000, respectively.

Valentine is perhaps best remembered for his extensive collection of United States half dimes, which he exhibited at the American Numismatic Society in 1914.

Silver was hoarded, a situation that stripped commercial and banking channels of half dimes, dimes, quarter dollars, half dollars, and silver dollars. Mintages of gold coins increased to take up the slack for the missing silver coins.

Why then were Seated Liberty half dimes still being struck? Perhaps Mint officials were unsure as to whether the new nickel five-cent coin would be accepted-if not, then perhaps they would have to focus again on silver half dime coins.

These coins were much smaller than dimes, in diameter and thickness, appearing to be "half dimes".

For twenty-five years from 1806 until 1829, no half dimes were struck. Then, in 1829, the federal government finally issued over 1 million of them. Many millions more were made over the next forty years.

Prior to introduction of the nickel, five-cent pieces were very small silver coins called half dimes.

The first United States silver coins were struck in 1794: dollars, halves and half dimes. The early half dimes were charming little coins and weighed only some 20 grains. There was no mark or indication of value on these coins until 1829.
