Unlike dimes and quarters, half dollars have attracted a large and loyal following of numismatists, almost from the cradle days of the hobby.

Bust half dollars with lettered edges have undeniable charm, much like the copper coinage of early America. They were struck with screw presses, and each working die was prepared individually, the date, stars and lettering punched in by hand.

A bag of half dollars will net a little more, maybe 718-720 ounces because half-dollars did not circulate as much as dimes and quarters.

Though Franklin half dollars were minted in the tens of millions, and are not hard to find today, there may not be as many out there as mintage records indicate.

Some years, the coins that would usually be made from "clad" (like the dimes, quarters, and half dollars in 1976) would be made in silver for special "silver proof sets." These are usually more valuable do to the value of the metal.
