The 1861-D half eagle is a very historic coin and very popular among collectors. The U.S. Government minted 1597 half eagles before the Confederacy seized the Mint on April 8, 1861.

The Half Eagle
For over 150 years, the five dollar gold piece was one of the mainstays of American currency. The first five dollar gold coin was authorized on April 2, 1792.

The Half Eagle Gold 5 Dollar coin was minted from 1795 to 1929. It was the first gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint.
The Capped Bust Half Eagle 5 Gold Dollar coins were minted from 1795 to 1798.

The half eagles being minted that year had more in common with Buffalo nickels than size: Both carried portraits of realistic-looking American Indians.

No Motto half eagles were minted until 1866, when they were replaced by coins with the newly mandated motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. The date 1866 provides a useful dividing line for the half eagle denomination.

The Liberty Half Eagle holds the distinction of being the only coin of any type or denomination to be struck at all seven mints.

The Liberty Head Half Eagle
The $5 Coronet, or what is more commonly known as the Liberty Head Half
Eagle, enjoyed one of the longest runs in the history of U.S. Coinage.  The
$5 Liberty Head Gold pieces were in circulation from 1839 to 1908.

The Charlotte and Dahlonega half eagles in the Milas collection included some of the most famous (and most mind-blowing) high grade pieces known. It's hard for me to pick a favorite as there were so many fantastic single coins.

This "Half Eagle" gold coin was designed by Bela Lyons Pratt and used the same designs for both obverse and reverse as the Indian Head $2.50 coin.

Liberty Head Eagle ...

The first half eagles left the Mint in late 1908 and were immediately attacked by critics who complained that the coin's reverse relief would attract dirt. Despite the complaints, the coin's design remained unchanged throughout its short life.

The intaglio design used on Indian Head quarter eagles and half eagles. These coins were struck from dies which had fields recessed, so that the devices - the areas usually raised - were recessed on the coins themselves.

Indian Gold Half Eagles and Quarter Eagles are almost impossible to find in MS grades due to the incuse design. After 1991, the flood gates opened and nearly every AU Indian Gold coin was being regraded as MS. Every series was being regraded.

In fact, the $5 Liberty is the first gold coin struck as official legal tender of the United States. Often referred to as a "Half Eagle" it was first struck in 1795- and minted through 1907.
