The half farthing British coin (1"8 of a penny, 1"1920 of a pound) was produced in various years between 1828 and 1856 (although proof coins were anomalously produced in 1868).

 


Half farthing:
½ farthing. Small bronze coin, minted from 1830s to 1850s and used mainly overseas. Recently, I was surprised to find one dated 1844 in a drawer. Other coins included quarter and third farthing.

Half Farthing - A denomination used more in the colonies than in this country. Issued by George IV, William IV and Victoria.
Half Groat - Twopence or half of a fourpence groat.

None of the bronze coins are scarce, and those issued by Edward VII in 1902 and George V in 1913 used to be reasonably often found in mint state.
The Half Farthing ...

Half farthings were also minted for some of Victoria's reign but were unpopular because of their small size. Smaller coins - one third and one quarter farthings - were minted mainly for use in some British colonies.

Interestingly, this token was not denominated in pence but was valued at 1/24 of a Spanish real, which, in the colonies, would have equalled one and one half farthings.

These were considered too clumsy for ordinary use and were replaced by pieces of reduced size (31mm) and weight (including a farthing) in 1806 and 1807. Half farthings prepared for use in Ceylon were released in 1842 they never came into general use ...
