The halfpenny coin ceased to be legal tender after 31 July 1969, although proof coins were produced, dated 1970, for the cased proof sets bidding farewell to the old currency.

The reverse side of a coin - opposite to the 'heads' (obverse) side of the coin. Derived from the kangaroo design used on Australian penny and halfpenny coins after 1937 and popularised in the game of two-up normally played with 2 pennies.

Proofs also occur in different metals from the normal coins, such as a normally copper coin being produced in proofs in copper, bronzed copper, gilt copper and silver as occurs for the Irish 1805 penny and halfpenny coins.
