Hard Times Tokens
Tokens issued during the years 1832 to 1844 to fill the need for small denomination coins, created because of hoarding during economic collapse.

The Hard Times tokens were issued from 1837 to 1844 and are the size of a large United States one cent piece. These tokens were generally stuck in copper and are generally either political theme tokens or merchant tokens.

Hard Times token An unofficial large cent-sized copper token struck in a wide variety of types during 1833-1843, serving as de facto currency, and bearing a politically inspired legend; or issued with advertising as a store card.

Her body's position on the reverse is an obvious play on an early hard times token promoting woman's suffrage. That alone is interesting, but this particular kneeling woman was used for its visual likeness to a similar anti-slavery movement image.

Very few coins of any denomination were jingling in most Americans' pocket change in 1838; the depression had led to hoarding of federal coinage, and so-called Hard Times tokens were being widely used as a money substitute.

Agent James Jackson Jarvis, editor of the newspaper Polynesian, a contract was made with the private minting facility of H.M. & E.I. Richards of Attleboro, Massachusetts, familiar to American numismatists as a manufacturer of Hard Times tokens.
