High Relief The Saint-Gaudens inspired effort of Charles Barber to reduce the Extremely High Relief down to a coin with acceptable striking qualities. After 11,250 coins, this effort was abandoned.
High Relief - A coin with deep concave fields, due to its design. High relief coins required extra pressure to be fully struck, and were difficult to stack. Some examples are the 1921 Peace dollar and the 1907 Roman Numerals double eagle.

Refers to a high pointed design feature on a coin's surface that is intentionally raised to an exceptional level. Producing a high relief coin requires multiple strikes, to fully push the metal into the deepest recesses of the die.

Ghosting - not enough metal for the coin causes the reverse to dip inward where the obverse has high relief - the portrait can be seen ghosted on the reverse.

Weak Strike - A coin with certain of its details (in the areas of high relief) not fully formed because of the hardness of alloy, insufficient striking pressure or improper die spacing.
For example, the 1804 Dollar always creates headlines every time one appears at auction. Another example is the stunning "Ultra High Relief" Saint Gaudens twenty dollar gold piece that routinely sets price records, $2.9 million in November 2005.
