Eagle holders
Made of polystyrene encasing with Mylar (polyethylene terephthalate) windows, these holders are relatively safe for long-term storage. They're attractive, with the encasing available in white or black.

 


The 2x2 holder should not be confused with the flip, which has no cardboard, but two mylar pockets with a paper insert to describe the coin.

Holders
Several types of "containers" for coins are available. Most anything will do for coins with little numismatic value, while nearly airtight holders made of inert materials are a good idea for valuable coins.

Alloy
A mixture of two or more metals.

Most holders come in packages which have labels that indicate that they are PVC free. If in doubt, ask a professional. Plastic "flips" that contain PVC have a blue tint and are softer and more pliable than plastic holders that do not contain PVC.

Plastic holders - Hard plastic holders are an attractive way for long-term coin collecting storage. Three pieces of hard plastic screw together - one to hold your coin and two for protection.

2x2 Coin holders are probably OK for longer term storage of lower cost coins but I would not use them for long term storage of valuable coins.

Album - A holder with slots for storing and displaying coins in a book-type manner. Common brand names include Whitman, Dansco and Harco.
Alloy - A combination of two or more metals, such as electrum or cupro-nickel.

The sealed holder says "Neutron Irradiated / Oak Ridge National Laboratory." Inside is a Mercury or Roosevelt dime. You see them in auctions or in coin stores. Some sellers get $10 each since they are such novelties now.

3. Good coin holder
Albums provide pockets for coin storage. The best thing about using a pocket is that even "dilapidated" coins or extremely worn coins are better protected.

slab Numismatic slang for the holder in which a coin is encapsulated by a grading service. The coin contained therein is said to be slabbed.

slab or slabbed - slang for a holder holding a coin that has been encapsulated by a coin grading service. Usually, the coin will graded, authenticated, and encapsulated in a sonically sealed holder, often by a 3rd party grading service.

Can also be caused by the coin sliding in a holder or coin drawer. Not as deep or noticeable as bag marks. Usually found on the high parts of a coin or in the open fields (background).

DO NOT USE Plastic holders that contain PVC. Often found in packaging materials used to store coins, 2x2 coin holders, flips, baseball cards and photo album pages, etc.

The small freeholder almost disappeared. Such "middle class' as existed was centered in the cities with their still viable commercial life.

You MUST remove the coin from the holder before scanning. Even the thinnest plastic used on cardboard flips inserts a barrier that greatly reduces your chance of a good scan.

The skills and equipment needed to encapsulate coins in slab-like holders can be acquired more easily than the expertise needed to accurately authenticate and grade coins.

All rolls are original bank wrapped or taken from BU bank or Federal Reserve bags and put in paper wrappers or plastic roll holders. They come as they were, with both nice coins and just average.

I've found that coins in flat holders (e.g. certified slabs) scan well enough, but if the holder is even the slightest bit wavy (as 2x2s can be), its best to place the coin directly on the scanbed.

Many 1930s commemoratives were sent to their original buyers in small cardboard holders. The coins were kept in place by a paper or cardboard band or tab.

I wasn't pleased at all when PCGS put it in a 20 holder after I cracked it out of its SEGS holder for the all-PCGS set I was creating.

Art is in the eye of the beholder, of course, and often what is beautiful to one will be ugly to another. Take for example the 1878 Morgan silver dollar. When it was introduced, virtually every numismatic publication condemned it as being ugly.

Note: I bought this coin as a fourree, without having taken it out of the holder it was in. A fourree would seem to be supported by the light weight and scattered dark areas, however, in hand the coin does not give the impression of being a fourree.

Obviously in the simplest sense this distinction is dependent on the eye of the beholder.

But if you can stretch your budget a bit and you have a chance to acquire a decent-looking example in a third-party holder, I would strongly encourage you to go for it. I absolutely love this issue.
