One of the cool things about coins is how you can flip the undesirable on its head. Take holed coins. Some people considered them undesirable. Holed coins are damaged coins.

Holed - The name given to a coin with a hole in it! Usually because it has been used as jewellery in the past. Needless to say collectors don't often want coins with holes in them unless that's how they were made.

Holed - or pierced. The making of a hole in a coin after it has left the mint. Done to enable the coin to be worn or to demonetise it.

Holed coins can be collected many ways. Some of the more popular ways are by date or year sets, type sets by design or denomination, or by metallic composition. Holed coins come in all varieties.

Holed (and very clipped), though may have been done officially at a later time to devalue the coin.

Holed
A coin having a hole drilled or pierced, for the purpose of dangling on a necklace, or some other reason. Holes can be carefully filled to avoid obvious detection (see Plug). Any holed coin, whether plugged or not, must be described as such.

ROUND-HOLED ROUND COINS
Early round coins with round holes can be divided into two major types.

The fact is that coins are damaged when used in jewelry, even if they're not holed, through the pressure applied by the settings they're in, through wear they receive by brushing against things as they're worn, and through oils and salts from skin.

Coins which have been polished, soldered, holed and repaired, used as jewelry, re-engraved or burnished, or which have other problems should always be specifically described as such, no matter what their grade level.

On the other hand, because about one-third of all Morgan Dollars are Uncirculated, a cleaned - holed, gouged, rim-nicked - Morgan Dollar would have to be very special indeed to have any problem overlooked.

Blows of varying intensity would cause potions of one side or edge to be more weakly struck than another. Many varieties are very crude in design. Other pieces were holed and strung on gold or copper wires to prevent loss or used for watch fobs, etc.

and their Values type books give price numbers but these are more deceptive than helpful due to the fact that every coin is an individual with countless factors that can never be pigeonholed into a few grades as used for modern coins.

A coin that is corroded, scratched, holed (drilled through so that it can be hung on a chain), altered, artificially toned, "dinged" on the edge, or simply unattractive for the grade is less desirable than a problem free specimen.
