More importantly, the supposedly "impaired Proofs" just don't look like impaired Proofs.
If you are under the belief that the 1894 S Barber dime is a Proof coin, then the coins mentioned above should be listed as Impaired Proof 3 and Impaired Proof 4.
Budget Recommendations: Build a set 1864-1872 in G-4 to VG-8 grade. The rare 1873 can either be omitted, or you can purchase one in impaired Proof grade.
A term used for an imperfect proof is an' impaired proof'. This must be taken into consideration when purchasing these coins remembering that proof is a definition of strike and not a definition of wear nor a grade.
The “Proof' label was used to describe either an exceptional MS piece or an unimpaired proof issue. It wasn’t until much later that the term proof referred to the method of manufacture rather than some superlative adjective.
