Incandescent light

Numismatic Inaugural medalIncomplete strike

incandescent light Direct light from a lamp, as opposed to indirect light such as that from a fluorescent bulb.

incandescent light: a normal light bulb, usually 75 Watts, used to grade coins.
incomplete strike: a coin that has parts of the design missing or weak. This can be caused by poor pressure, mis-aligned dies, or foreign matter on the dies.

INCANDESCENT LIGHTING
Ordinary house lighting. The best light to use when grading uncirculated coins. Best viewing is 3 feet from a 100 watt bulb. See also Fluorescent Lighting.
INCUSE ...

This 'preview' feature explains my strong preference for incandescent lights over flash units. It is true that the modern electronic flashes are daylight balanced and very easy to use.

So, second place provides for full incandescent light (your standard 60 watt filament bulbs). A 100w frosted incandescent light in an otherwise darkened room is best.

For example, I always try to look at coins under a 100 watt incandescent lightbulb. However, a 60 or 75 watt bulb, or a tensor lamp is also perfectly acceptable, so long as you always use the same type light and intensity.
