Incuse Design
A few coin types show part of the design recessed below the field rather than raised. This was most common in Southern Italy during the 5th century BC and before.

The incuse design presented new challenges for mint engineers and continues to present grading challenges today on the $2 1/2 and $5 Indians. For instance, wear on these coins is hard to judge.

Unique Incuse Design The new designs broke completely with past tradition of raised relief coins. Pratt, his friend, recommended the new gold coins be "incuse" with designs recessed into the metal rather than raised.

This "Quarter Eagle" gold coin was the first intaglio or incuse design and represented a new approach for American coins.

Unlike the majority of coins that boast raised images, the effected elements noted above are incuse designs on this coin and are thus raised on the die.
